3-Carbamoyl Methyl-5 Methyl Hexanoic Acid is an organic compound with the molecular formula C10H19NO3. It is a derivative of valproic acid, a medication commonly used as an anticonvulsant and mood stabilizer. The compound can be synthesized from L-leucine by a series of reactions including oxidation, conversion to a nitrile, and hydrolysis of the nitrile to yield the carboxylic acid. The final step involves conversion of the carboxylic acid to the carbamoyl methyl ester using a coupling reagent such as dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) and N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS), followed by deprotection of the ester with a base such as sodium hydroxide. 3-Carbamoyl Methyl-5 Methyl Hexanoic Acid is used as a chiral building block in the synthesis of chiral drugs and natural products.
